I’ve tried to keep up with various things, got a couple of books that I am reading simultaneously, have kept up with popular media, and of course I have listened to various podcasts during my commutes to and fro.
Here are some interesting and pertinent ones from last week:
- If you haven’t heard of Gary Vaynerchuk, there’s no shortage of ways to connect with him via social media. He’s very passionate and enthusiastic, and sometimes you just need to hear positive and encouraging things related to the hustle and grind of everyday. In this particular episode he speaks with Jewel (singer/songwriter). She shares her life story of resilience, ideas about happiness, and how she has changed her mindset, cognitive scripts, and been practicing mindfulness(a big professional interest of mine) as a way of cultivating compassion for self. I also love her analogy of balance vs harmony.
- At some point in working with people, the topic of love, sex, intimacy, or sexuality comes up in the counseling process. Hence, I appreciate the candor and honesty of Jacyln Friedman‘s Unscrewed podcast. In this particular episode she talks with a sociologist that has studied the college “hook up” culture and debunks what it is and what it isn’t. Don’t worry parents, the norm in college is hardly the alcohol fueled sexual orgies that the media may want you to believe is happening on every college campus.
- The Boss, what’s not to love about Mr. Bruce Springsteen? Marc Maron, who’s a comic and has a great podcast, is becoming one of my favorite interviewers. He has a knack for soliciting the interviewees’ life story, while not shying away from the poignant questions re: dysfunctions, heartache, or life changing moments. Bruce speaks honestly about his unfulfilling life, defensive behaviors, depression, and the inevitable realization that he needed to have a safe space to process his life. He’s a champion for mental health, and despite how masculine blue collar guy you might be, there’s no shame in asking for help, and talking things out, just like Springsteen did.
Got a favorite podcast that I’m missing out on, give me the details in the comments below and I’ll get on it.
As they say on The Moth, “hope you have a story worthy week.”
